INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF AGRICULTURAL LIBRARIANS & USERS COMMUNITY (ICALUC-2021)

International Conference on

Management of Knowledge Resource Centres in the Networked Digital Environment: Trends, Challenges and Opportunities”

BACKGROUND:

Library is considered to be the heart of an educational institution. Libraries play a very important role in teaching, learning and research, and their main objective is to support the teaching, learning and research activities of the institution. Traditionally, libraries and Information Centres have been providing all kinds of information services manually for the benefit of their user community. Recent developments in information and communication technologies have enabled the users to access the library and its resources from anywhere using new and innovative technologies. At the same time, libraries are also expanding their reach by extending their services in a networked digital environment so that the users get the required information within a very short span time.

Agricultural libraries have a major role and responsibility in improving the agricultural education and research for sustainable development in food production in India. Agricultural libraries are also entrusted with the duty of providing various information products & services to farmers, livestock producers, agricultural business organizations, research workers, subject specialists, and extension workers. Right information at the right time helps in overcoming the challenges of food and hunger, which will help in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Agriculture has an important role in the growth of Indian Economy and the scientists, students, researchers and farmers are putting all their efforts to fulfil the food requirements of the country. The Internet has drastically transformed libraries and library services, which need to be accepted if they want to continue to remain active and useful. The agricultural libraries have to develop and adopt various innovative and emerging technologies to meet the end users with latest information. In the present digital information world, there is a need for identifying and implementing new and innovative technologies for information service delivery.

ASSOCIATION OF AGRICULTURAL LIBRARIES AND DOCUMENTALISTS OF INDIA (AALDI)

The Association of Agricultural Librarians and Documentalists of India (AALDI) was founded in 1971 with an aim to bring Agricultural Librarians of the country on a platform to join hands to address matters of professional interests in improving library system and services towards the agricultural user community. The Association held its General Body meeting at Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalapur in June 1973 and decided to publish a periodical entitled “AALDI Bulletin” annually to give vent to the intellectual thought of the Agricultural Library Professionals. The efforts of the Association bore fruits in 1974 when the first volume of the periodical saw the light of the day. To keep pace with the changing scenario and concept of agricultural librarianship, the title of the periodical was changed to “Indian Journal of Agricultural Library and Information Services” in 2008. It is important to note that the journal has been approved by the UGC vide UGC Journal Identification No. 64538. Due to some reason or other the Association became dormant and slowly passed into hibernation after 1993. It was revived during a workshop on “Krishiprabha” Indian Agricultural Dissertation Repository held at CCS HAU, Hissar in 2008.

About the International Conference

Over the years, Library and Information Science (LIS) has grown tremendously keeping pace with the technological developments. The agricultural libraries in particular, are facing many challenges in meeting the information requirements of the stakeholders in the networked digital environment. It is envisaged that renaissance in library and information science lies in the application of resurgent digital tools and technologies. Considering the significance of sensitization of the LIS professionals on the latest developments in the field and to ensure effective and efficient information services to the stakeholders, AALDI regularly conducts its annual convention where our professional fraternity meet to discuss the professional issues and prepare a roadmap for the future. So far, AALDI had organized seven National Conferences since 2009. The latest National Conference was held in 2019 at Navsari Agricultural University, Navasari Gujarat. During the office bearers meeting it was decided to hold an International Conference of AALDI to have a network of professionals from across the globe to take our profession to the next level.
